THE NECESSITY TO OFFER SACRIFICE FOR SIN HAS EXISTED IN MAN'S CONSCIOUSNESS FROM THE BEGINNING. A. Sin brings death, alienation from God. 1. God said, "The day you eat thereof, ye shall." 2. God said, "The soul that sinneth shall surely die." B. Man cannot be complete apart from God. 1. He lives on an animal plane. 2. Conscious of the incompleteness he seeks to fill the void with a variety of things. C. I cannot have true peace apart from God. 1. There is a pseudo peace. 2. "There is no rest for the wicked." 3. "The wicked are tossed like a stormy sea." D. For man to come back into fellowship with God, something must be done about his sin. 1. Because righteous judgment declares death for sin, there must be death. 2. This is where the animal sacrifice came in. a. In the garden Adam sought to cover his consciousness of guilt with fig leaves. God have him a coat of animal skin. b. The animal becomes the substitute. c. The blood was offered showing death for "the life of the flesh is in the blood." 3. The passover sacrifice. a. A male lamb of the first year without blemish. b. This was the substitute for the first-born in the house. c. After blood sprinkled, lamb was to be eaten, showing restored fellowship. d. Jesus, the lamb of God, offered on the day of the passover feast. II. JOHN'S FIRST VIEW OF JESUS IN HEAVEN IS AS A LAMB THAT HAS BEEN SLAUGHTERED. A. Isaiah said He was brought as a Iamb to the slaughter. B. What will it be like when we see Jesus face to face? 1. Isaiah said as many as look upon Him shall be shocked, for His face is so marred He cannot be recognized as a human being. He has no beauty that we would desire Him, we hid our faces from Him. Yet He was wounded for our transgressions. C. It is possible that He will still bear the marks of the punishment. He endured at the hands of men to redeem me? 1. To Thomas He showed the marks. 2. When He returns to Israel they ask Him, "What is the meaning of the wounds in your hands?" Zech. 13:6. III. FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD IS POSSIBLE FOR YOU BECAUSE OF THE AWESOME PRICE PAID BY JESUS CHRIST. A. He bore the punishment for your sins. B. Behold the Lamb of God who taketh away the sins of the world. |
