Luke 1 :28,29 "And when she saw him she was' troubled with his saying" No light think- for Mary to 'conceive Son of God this-way. Reputation threatened, yet quiet submission. "Behold the handmaid of the Lord be it unto me according to thy word." I. THE SORROWS OF MARY. A. Birth in manger. B. Herod's attempt to take child's life. C. Flight to Egypt. D. To, see her son despised and rejected of man. E. To see the trial and now the cross. II. "THERE STOOD BY THE CROSS OF JESUS, HIS MOTHER." A. Here we see fulfillment of Simeon's prophesy. 1. At Christ's presentation. "This child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel (yea, a sword shall pierce through your own soul also)" 2. The greatest privilege was to bring the greatest sorrow. 3. Try to read the heart of this mother in this hour. As the sword pierces her soul. a. She saw the brow pierced with thorns. b. She watched the pierced hands and feet grow numb and livid. c. She hears His cry of thirst. B. There she stood by the cross of Jesus. 1. You would think that she might faint. II. HERE WE SEE CHRIST SETTING EXAMPLE FOR CHILDREN TO HONOR THEIR PARENTS. A. Commandment for children to honor parents goes beyond obedience. 1. It includes LOVE, AFFECTION, GRATITUDE, AND RESPECT. 2. Not just for young folks. It follows us all our lives. B. Christ in submission to parent during youth. C. The years of obedience to Mary had ended, BUT NOT OF HONOR. 1. Here we see Him looking after her present necessity and future needs. D. First three sayings of cross concern others. E. "Woman" Interesting, scripture never records Him calling her "mother." F. Why did not Mary go to live with one of her other children? 1. "A man's enemies shall be those of his own household." 2. Speaking from personal reference. III. "WOMAN, BEHOLD THY SON." A. Here we see ,universal needs of man to behold Christ. |
