JOHN 12:12-19

"THIS THY DAY"

I. WHAT THIS DAY MEANT TO THE ROMANS.
        A. The attitude of the soldiers to this entry.
                1. Contrast the triumphant entries of generals.

II. WHAT THIS DAY MEANT TO GOD.
        A. He was fulfilling His word to the people.
                1. Prophesy of dying Jacob, Gen. 49:9-11.
                   "The scepter shall not depart from Judah nor a lawgiver from between his
                   feet until Shiloh come; and unto Him shall the gathering of the people be
                   binding His foal unto the vine, and His ass's colt unto the choice vine."
                2. Dan. 9: 24-27 Hebdomads seventy sevens.
                        a. 7 sevens rebuilding Jerusalem. 49 yrs
                        b. 62 sevens then the Messiah. 434 yrs. - 483
                3. Zech. "Rejoice greatly O daughter of Zion, shout O daughter of Jerusalem,
                   behold the king cometh unto thee. He is just, and having salvation, lowly
                   and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass."

III PHARISEES - WHAT IT MEANT.
        A. Threat, vs. 19.
        B. Judgment.
                1. John 10:24 "If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly."
                2. God was telling them plainly who it was they were to crucify.
        C. Christ informed Pharisees if people were silent, stones would cry out.

IV. WHAT THIS DAY MEANT TO PEOPLE.
        A. Hope.
                1. Their cry Hosanna -- Save now.
        B. A King.
                1. Wise men -- "Where is born king."
                2. Crowd -- "Blessed is the king of Israel."
                3. Pilate -- "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews."

V. WHAT DID THIS DAY MEAN TO CHRIST?
        A. He came to Jerusalem for a purpose.
                1. "For the Son of Man must go to Jerusalem and there be slain."
                2. He came not to be crowned king.
        B. It may well be called the tearful entry.
                1. Luke records, upon coming to top of hill overlooking city He began to weep.
                   "If though had only known in this thy day the things that belong to thy
                   peace.
                2. One of the most tragic cries -- If I had only known.

VI. WHAT THAT DAY MEANS TO YOU.
        A. What group are you standing with?
                1. Romans  -one.
                2. Pharisees.
                3. Crowd acclaiming Christ as King.
