MATTHEW 6:1

Intro: 4th section of sermon.
        2nd principle.
The Christian living his life in this world in the presence of God and submission to
        Him.
This chapter in two sections: Our religious life and our worldly life.
        Very searching, a revealing chapter.

I. THE PRINCIPLE, "TAKE HEED THAT YE DO NOT YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS BEFORE MEN TO BE SEEN OF MEN."
        A. Word "alms."
        B. The fine balance of Christian life.
                1. "Let your light so shine." C. The real choice is pleasing God or
                    pleasing self.
                2. "Righteousness before men..." is it not men or God?
                        a. Why do we want to please man?
                        b. So they will think well of us.
                3. Subtleness of sin. What might appear to be a very selfless act may in
                   reality be very selfish.
        D. We need constant reminders of our relationship to God.
                1. Supreme object in life to please Him.
                2. Christ so lived.
                3. We live continually in His presence.
                        a. He knows our hearts. "Ye are they that do justify yourselves
before men, but God knoweth your hearts; for that which is highly
esteemed amongst men is abomination in the sight of God."
        E. Next the question of rewards.
                1. Quite right to seek the reward of God.
                2. Christ, "who for the joy that was set..."
                3. Moses realized the "recompense of reward."
        F. No reward from God for those who seek it from man.
                1. If as I am preaching the gospel, my chief concern is what people think of
my preaching, I have my reward.

II. RIGHT AND WRONG WAY TO GIVE.
        A. Wrong way is to announce it (sound a trumpet).
                1. So to give as to draw attention.
                2. Lady going into new work "by faith."
                3. Keep eyes off numbers. Like to tell how many saved, etc.
                        a. Want people to say isn't that wonderful, "they have their reward."
        B. Right way is not to let left hand know what the right is doing.
                1. Do not announce to others.
                2. Do not announce to yourself. Don't try to keep books.
                3. I don't think there is anyone who likes a braggart, but it's difficult not
to pride yourself because you are not like him.
                4. Let God keep the books.

Matt. 25, I was in prison, etc. "When did we...?"
