Micah 5:4 He Shall Be Great
I. Beginning in chapter 4 Micah is prophesying of the last days and the
kingdom of God being established upon the earth, with Jerusalem
becoming the headquarters of the King who will judge over the nations.
A. In chapter 5 He tells us that the Judge of Israel will be
smitted with a rod upon the cheek.
1. Last week we considered that prophecy and many others
that predicted the suffering and the death of the
Messiah.
2. In verse 2 Bethlehem is declared to be the birthplace
of the Messiah.
a. This prophecy has become well known because of
the wise men who came from the East to honor
the birth of the King of the Jews.
b. Herod inquired from the Bible scholars where
the King was to be born, and they gave him
this prophecy of Micah.
c. Verse two also tells us that He will rule over
Israel, and that He has existed forever. "Whose
goings forth have been from of old, from
everlasting."
1. John tells us that in the beginning was
the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God. And the Word
became flesh and dwelt among us.
2. John begins his first epistle, "That
which was from the beginning which we
have heard, which we have seen with our
eyes, which we have looked upon, which
our hands have handled, of the Word of
life, for the life was manifested and
we have seen it, and bear witness and
show unto you that eternal life which
was with the Father and manifested unto
us."
3. This Judge who existed from the beginning who was to be
smitten upon the cheek with a rod, who would be born in
Bethlehem, according to verse three would give them up
until she travailed to bring forth.
a. Jesus told the Jews that they would not see Him
again until they said, "Blessed is He who
cometh in the name of the Lord."
b. Zechariah tells us that they shall look upon
Him whom they have pierced, and they shall
mourn for Him as one mourneth for his only son.
II. Verse four tells us that He shall stand and feed in the strength of
the Lord, and in the majesty of the name of the Lord, and He shall be
great unto the ends of the earth.
A. When the angel Gabriel was announcing to the virgin Mary the
birth of her Son, he said, "He shall be great, and shall be
called the Son of the highest, and He shall sit upon the
throne of David."
B. In Micah the prediction is that He shall be great to the ends
of the earth.
1. In Psalm 2 we read, The Lord hath said unto Me, Thou
art My Son, this day have I begotten Thee, "Ask of Me
and I shall give to you the heathen for thine
inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for
thy possession."
2. Jesus told the disciples that after the period of the
great tribulation, they would see the Son of Man coming
in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
3. Rev.1:7 tells us, "Behold He cometh with clouds and
every eye shall see Him, and they also which pierced
Him, and all the families of the earth shall wail
because of Him. "He shall be great to the ends of the
earth."
EPH 1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory,
may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation
in the knowledge of him:
EPH 1:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may
know what is the hope of his calling, and what the
riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
EPH 1:19 And what [is] the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward
who believe, according to the working of his mighty
power,
EPH 1:20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead,
and set [him] at his own right hand in the heavenly
[places],
EPH 1:21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and
dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this
world, but also in that which is to come:
EPH 1:22 And hath put all [things] under his feet, and gave him [to be]
the head over all [things] to the church,
EPH 1:23 Which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in
all.
PHI 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given
him a name which is above every name:
PHI 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of [things]
in heaven, and [things] in earth, and [things] under the
earth;
PHI 2:11 And [that] every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ [is]
Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
PSA 22:27 All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the
Lord: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship
before thee.
PSA 22:28 For the kingdom [is] the LORD'S: and he [is] the governor
among the nations.
C. John describes in Revelation 5 the glorious scene in heaven
when Jesus, the only one in the universe who is worthy, takes
the scroll from the right hand of the Father. Heaven breaks
forth in songs of praise.
REV 5:9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take
the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast
slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of
every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
REV 5:10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall
reign on the earth.
REV 5:11 And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about
the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number
of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and
thousands of thousands;
REV 5:12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to
receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and
honour, and glory, and blessing.
REV 5:13 And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and
under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all
that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour,
and glory, and power, [be] unto him that sitteth upon
the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.
D. In Hebrews 2 we are told that we should give the more earnest
heed to the things that we have heard, lest at any time we
should drift away, for if the word spoken by angels was
steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a
just recompense of reward how shall we escape if we neglect so
great salvation which was spoken to us by our Lord, and
confirmed unto us by them that heard Him, God also bearing
them witness both with signs and wonders and gifts of the Holy
Spirit according to His own will.
1. He has provided great salvation to the ends of the
earth, for it shall come to pass that whosoever shall
call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
