PSALM 4:6

"WHO WILL SHOW US ANY GOOD"

Intro: There seems to be a restlessness in man within the core & fiber of his being.
Note this question not asked by David.

I. THE ORIGIN OF THIS RESTLESSNESS.
        A. Must go back to garden of Eden.
                1. We see man in perfect contentment.
                2. Living in harmony & fellowship with God.
        B. God has spoken of His creation & declared "It is good" and God rested from
           His works."
        C. Then entered sin - man rebelled against God's command and restlessness was
           the result.
        D. God no longer rested and man could not rest.
                1. Jesus said "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work."
                2. Man is saying "Who will show us any Good?"

II. THE REASON FOR RESTLESSNESS. SIN.
        A. Man was made for God "Thou hast created..."
                1. Living for myself can only produce restlessness.
                        a. That sense of frustration and vanity.
                        b. That quest for something more.
                        c. I talk to the poor man.
                        d. I talk to the rich man.
                        e. I talk to the failure in life.
                        f. I talk to the successful man.
                2. I can only rest when in fellowship & harmony with God.
                        a. Is such a fellowship & harmony possible?
                                1. Not as long as sin & rebellion present.
                        b. Thus I must rest where God rests.
                                1. In the finished work of the cross. "I have come to do
the will of the Father & to finish His work." "It is
                                   finished."
        3. Sin & Satan are a constant hassle. My desires for sin keep me in turmoil.
                a. I must realize the power of the cross to remove my guilt.
                b. I must realize the power of the cross to make me righteous.
                c. I must cease from my own works.

Ill. THE CURE FOR RESTLESSNESS.
        A. "Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us."
                1. Walk in harmony with God.
                2. Cease your rebellion & seek His face.
        B. The results.
                1. "Thou hast put gladness in my heart."
                        a. Joy is one of the first consciousness of the newborn child of God.
                        b. The Christian who has nothing of material possessions can know
greater joy than the non-Christian who has an abundance.
                        c. There is a group in our society for whom I have the greatest
                           sympathy "Jet Set."
                2. "I will lay me down in peace, and sleep."
                        a. Oh what beautiful rest when I leave it all with God.
                        b. Total commitment, total rest.
                        c. One of the industries not needed in Kingdom age: pharmaceutical.
Tons and tons of sedatives and sleeping pills sold annually.
        C. "Who will show us any good?"

David gives the only answer, "Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us" You
are tired of everything in life because you were made for God, the clamant cry of that
deepest portion of your being is for God, and it is impossible to satisfy it with anything
less. Until you turn to God there is no rest.
